Experts stated that the prevalence of acute conjunctivitis in dry eyes has considerably grown in Delhi′s hospitals recently as a result of air pollution.

Besides harming the lungs and heart, air pollution continues to be the primary cause of eye problems inducing irritation and inflammation, which can cause redness, watering, dry eyes, conjunctivitis, and ocular allergies including itching, swelling of the eyelids, blurred vision and other vision-related issues. Nitric oxide, sulphur dioxide, and nitrogen dioxide are air pollutants that can irritate and burn the skin. Additionally, elevated levels of carbon dioxide and monoxide might irritate the eyes.

Dr. Himanshu Garkoti, an ophthalmologist at RML Hospital, said that there had been an increase in the number of patients complaining of conjunctivitis and ocular allergies due to air pollutants, with the risk being higher for the elderly and people who have just had eye surgery. He continued by saying that due to the dense smog, it is best to wear glasses when going for a morning walk, especially for older people and young children, as the likelihood of developing allergic irritation is higher in the morning and evening.

Dr. Samir Sud, Director of Sharp Sight, on concerning notes, stated that the cornea is the eye′s most delicate structure and is susceptible to damage from the outside environment. Only a thin layer of precorneal tear film protects the eyes from dangerous substances, making them more vulnerable to numerous disorders.

It is possible to reduce the risk of ocular allergy and infection by limiting exposure to outdoor air pollution and spending more time indoors.
